WINTER GARDENS
WANGANUI CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL
WANGANUI LAKE SITE APPROVED A decision that the winter gardens, which are to be the Wanganui Centennial memorial, should be erected in Virginia Lake, was reached at jast night’s meeting of the Wanganui City Council as a result of an inspection m several sites yesterday afternoon l y lhe council and engineer. Mr. W. W. J. Rogers, Mayor o; Wanganu?, said thaL at a meeting o. the Centennial Committee in Vvullington last Friday <• subsidy for ti-.< history of Wanganui being published by the Whanganui Historical Society, was approved. The subsidy for the winter gardens was held over until the site had been selected. In company with Crs. J. W. Broad, O. Hales, G. E. Bennett and J. Siddells, the town clerk, the city engineer, and the city gaidener, he had made an inspection of sites at Virginia Lake and Moutoa Gardens. Mr. Rogers said that he felt personally that lhe Virginia Lake site was tne correct place for a winter gardens, the space in Moutoa Gardens being too small and not permitting of future extensions. Cr. O. Hales said that the site at Virginia Lake was on a solid clay bank which would aid the city engineer in his work.
