MANY VISITORS TO EGMONT
SKIING CONDITIONS GOOD HAWERA, June 19. About 40 members of lhe Mt. Egmont Alpine Club, including parties from the Patea and Kaponga sections, tramped to Syme Hut yesterday under the leadership of Mr. R. Syme. Warm rain fell on the southern slopes, washing away much snow. There was none within half a mile of the Dawson Falls Hostel and very little on the ski run. On account of this, skiers tramped aroui.d to Manganui Gorge, where they enjoyed good skiing conditions on the upper slopes. A very large number of visitor? tramped to the Stratford side, more than 100 skiers availing themselves of the excellent conditions. Several Wellington people and many others from various parts of Taranaki were on skis for the first time this season.
Northern Ground Popular Twenty-one Taranaki Alpine Club • members spent Saturday night in | Takurangi Hut, and yesterday there i were 70 members of the club, includ- j ing representative, of the junior ski ! club, and the Inglewood section, on the Maketawa Valley slopes. Climbing conditions were good, but the crater temperature was extremely cold. Two other parties of alpine club ! members reach'd the summit, but i most spent the day in skiing or giv- I ing instruction to junior members and novices. There were more than 60 ; cars at the North Egmont Hostel. • where the weather was better than ! on the lowlands. Patches of snow . still lay on the track and around the hostel.
