RANGITIKEI HUNT

MEET AT PUKEPAPA HILL (Own Correspondent). MARTON, June 18. A perfect day after heavy rain overnight went a long way towards making Wednesday’s hunt the most successful of the season. The hounds threw off in Poppe’s, and it was only a matter of minutes before a hare was put up in the bluegum plantation. A burning scent led the pack away towards Mayo’s, turning down Whale's Line back into Poppe's, and heading back to the plantation. The hounds soon pushed their quarry through the cover and headed for Black's gravel pit, where they were at a loss. The huntsmen soon ad them on the line again, do,wn the main road towards Bulls, but puss turned back into Poppe's, making for the 'cover whence she had started. Here scent failed, and although two other fresh hares were raised, the hounds could not keep their line. It was now decided to try fresh country, and the hunt moved on over Pukepapa Hill to A. Whale’s property. Hares were numerous here, and after several short bursts we settled down to (he best run of the season. A big strong hare got up in the back of Whale’s and taking a turn round Johnston’s, back into Whale's, headed for Crofton. Over the boundary into Finnemore’s and across the road to Follett's, lhe field were all out io keep near the hounds. A slight check on top of the hill and the pack was away again leading the Held over big gorse fences to Phillips’ boundry, where we turned and ran to the Crofton road, turning left-handed again to cross, Whale’s Line into Matthew's. Scent seemed to- fail here, bu' the hounds were working well and after some hesitation picked up their line, heading straight across Matthew's for Read's Line. It was late afternoon by this time and scent was lost in a cold shady gully. A tired field were quite content to call it a day, and dusk was falling as they headed back for Pukepapa Hill, thence to “Linfield” where Mrs. Bailey and Miss N. Bailey entertained at a very acceptable afternoon tea. Those foliowin;; were: —Huntsman A. Goodwin on Marminga, DeputyMasters F. McLean on Buster Boy, R. K. Simpson.on Ben Braggie, Hon. Whip Q. O.
