SALESMAN FOR SENTENCE VICTIM "TRUSTED HIM IMPLICITLY” [ Pci Press Association.] NEW PLYMOUTH, May 17. ”1 trusted him implicitly,'' .said Rex Eldred Smith, sharemilker, of Okaiawa, when relating at New Plymouth how lan Carr Douglas, 23, married, salesman, had practised false pretences upon him. Carr, who admitted to charges of false pretences and one of forgery, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Unusual methods of gaing the confidence of his victims were used by Carr. As a result he traded in Smith’s 1928 model car for a 1938 model. The offences, all of which were committed aoout March 31 were; Obtaining a motor-car valued at £BO by representing that his mother had left him £BOOO and that he wouju deposit £4OO to Smith’s credit m a Hawera bank; obtaining a motor-car valued at £430 from W. R. Phillips, Dominion Motors, Ltd., by representing that he was Rex Eldred Smith, that he had been left £BOOO by an aunt, that the 1928 car was his property, and that he had an account in the Bank of Australasia, ana forging the name of Rex Eldred Smith to a promissory note for £4OO IGs 3d in favour of Dominions Motors, Ltd.
