WITH THE HOUNDS

OPENING OF RANGITIKEI SEASON. (Own Correspondent.) “We shall ever remember that glorious day, When to “Rosebank” we rattled away, Every hound seem’d that day by instinct to know That the Fern Flats country would give us a go.” Ideal weather, good hunting country and the hounds in fine fettle greeted the members of the Rangitikei Hunt when they opened the 1939 season with a meet at the Marton (Mr. J. Brice’s property, “Rosebank." Fern Flats, on Wednesday afternoon. I All was expectancy, the hunters were on their toes and the riders anxious to hear the huntsman’s horn for the cry of “Here we go!” and off they I galloped over the Master’s paddocks in close proximity to the homestead and across the adjoining properties on to Messrs. K. Stevens’, F. H. Dexter’s and S. W. Morrison’s, where a good run ensued. Pussy was found and the hounds set off in pursuit. It was a short run over some stiff fences, but eventually the quarry eluded its pursuers. Bac k'again over the same properties, the horses clearing the obstacles in splendid style, and a rousing gallop, followed with very few empty saddles. The ground was in perfect order for hunting, but unfortunately the scent was not too good and a halt was made at the master’s residence, where an appetising afternoon tea dispensed by Mrs. J. Brice and her lady helpers compensated for any disappointment in not registering a “kill.” At the conclusion of the day’s run the master thanked the members for responding in such a generous manner in making the opening run such a great success and he sincerely hoped that the run would be the forerunner of many a pleasant hunt to follow. Three hearty cheers were given for the Master and Mrs. J. Brice, and thus ended an auspicious opening of the 1939 hunting season. Among ihe followers were: The master (Mr. J. Brice) on Taura; Messrs.
