MARTON MAGISTRATE’S COURT

BREACHES OF TRAFFIC REGULATIONS MARTON, April 27. Both the police and tne traffic inspector (Mr. M. J. Hartigan) had cases dealing with breaches of the traffic regulations to be nearu by Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M., in the Marton Court on Wednesday afternoon. The police (Sergeant T. F. Brenchley) prosecuted in the following case. P. D. Hughes was fined 30s, costo 12s, for driving a motor-cycle along Broadway witnout a driver’s licence. Constable Bowman said Hugnes had been to. Mr. Hartigan for a licence, but was not granted one, and had not been issued with one yet. When first accosted Hughes said Mr. Hartigan had given him permission to ride nis cycle without a licence.

The traffic inspector proceeded in the following cases:— William Sneppard pleaded guilty by letter to the charge of driving a motor vehicle on October 29, near Bulls, without a warrant of fitness. He was fined 30s, costs 12s. John Edwin Fergusson was fined £l, costs 12s, for carrying no warrant oi fitness on a motor-car he was driving at Turakina on January 28. Pleading guilty to the charge, defendant saiu he had no excuse to offer. Mr. Hartigan said the warrant was nine weeks overdue. For aiding and abetting an offence in respect of a warrant of fitness F. G. Jolly was fined £l, costs 10s. Driving a car at Marton without being the holder of a driver's licence cost Albert Alexander Richardson 255. costs 10s. R. B. Jurgens pleaded guilty to driving a tractor at Bonny Glen on March 13 with no number plates affixed. Defendant said he had them at home, but had forgotten to put them on the tractor.A fine of 15s, costs 12s, was imposed. For failing to give way to traffic on the right, Edward John Keeble was fined 30s, costs 10s. Defendant pleaded guilty by letter. The inspector said defendant was driving a motor-car and came out of Hereford Street into Wellington Road disregarding the regulation and narrowly avoided a collision. For passing on the Leedstown Road-Hunterville intersection, Arthur Bullock, junr., was fined £l, costs 12s Thomas Glasgow was charged witii driving a lorry at Turakina exceeding his heavy traJJic licence. James Cooper was charged with driving a vehicle dangerously loaded. I Mr. J. F. R. Wallace appeared for Cooper and pleaded guilty. The inspector said the offence took place on Marton Show day, defendant, driving a lorry along High Street with two persons in the cab, one on the running board, and one on the front mudguard. In commenting on the very dangerous practice it was to ride on the mudguard, the magistrate inflicted a fine of 10s, costs 10s. Obscene Language and Assault. Harry Hakaraia was charged with using obscene language in a public place and assault at Kakariki. He pleaded not guilty to both charges. Sergeant T. F. Brenchley prosecuted. | Clifford Button, baker’s roundsman, ; Marton, said that between 6 and 6.30 |p.m. on March 25, a Maori woman asked him to leave a suitcase at Hakaj raia's place, and not knowing there was a Harry Hakaraia, left it at Lou 11-lakaraia’s house. Later, Harry Haka- . raia stopped him and witness told Mrs. Hakaraia that he had left the suitcase at Lou’s place, and as it was I only about. 300 yards down the road suggested to accused that he get it. 1 'Accused then used the language as [charged, and caught hold of witness’, ishirt and arm, tearing the shirt. Charges of being on licensed premises after hours and giving a false name were preferred against W. E Keeble. In a letter to the Court, Keeble pleaded guilty to both charges, and asked that, as he had a wife and family, the tine be made as small as possible. Sergeant T. F. Brenchley said that at 8.55 p.m. on April 10 he saw a man enter the back entrance of the White Hart Hotel and later saw him come out with some bottles of liquor (produced). He accosted the man, who gave his name as Bill Smith, of Turakina. When it. was suggested that they go and z.erview the licensee he bolted and witness had to give chase and caught him after some trouble.] He refused to give witness his name | and only did so when threatened with I arrest. In a .judgment, summons case Joe Rowe was' ordered to pay Low and Gregory £9 16s 3d, costs 15s 6d, in deI fault 10s days in Wanganui prison, ! warrant to be suspended so long as debtor pays 10s per month from I amount owing, first payment to be J made on May 1.
