DEMOCRACIES WARNED
ONLY WAY TO RESIST TYRANNY. GREAT SPIRITUAL EFFORT. TORONTO, April 24. Earl Baldwin, issuing a warning in | a speech here to-day that the demo- | cracies could only resist tyranny suci cessfully if their spiritual effort were I greater than their material effort, blamed fhe Versailles Treaty and reparations for to-day’s distracted Europe. They had ruined Germany And upset the whole economic structure of Europe, he said. Civilisation would perish if Nazi triumphs were gained on Europe’s bloody fields. When Louis XIV sought world domination, and likewise when Napoleon did so, it was answered, and it was answered again in 1914. "If the challenge comes again we can do no other than go to war, so help us God,” added Lord Baldwin.
