LAWN TENNIS

WANGANUI EAST CLUB COMPETITIONS CONCLUDED A SUCCESSFUL SEASON. As far as the Wanganui East Lawn Tennis Club competitions were concerned the 1938-39 season closed last week-end when two finals were played. Throughout, the standard of play was high and club members will look back on the season as a successful one. Although the earlier part of the season was marred by rain and wind, the latter half, with its glorious weather, fully compensated the keener players. The courts were in splendid order right up to the closing day and the club's players were fortunate in having the best lawn courts in Wanganui at their disposal. rhe supervisor of the grounds, Mr. J. C. Ward, has his work well in hand for re-conuitioning the lawns during Ihe off-season and with the efficient work always carried out by the groundsman, members will have the courts in fine condition for the 193940 season, to which all players will be eagerly looking forward. A full programme of friendly matches with neighbouring clubs was carried out during the season, games being played against Westmere, Okoia, Bulls, Hunterville, Rata, Gonville and Feilding. Return matches were played in most cases and all members had the opportunity to participate in one or more of these games. Next year, it is hoped, players will be able to continue on the same lines, as these friendly matches proved invaluable, not only from the tennis point of view but also from the social aspect.
