LEFT THEIR MARK

N.Z. HORSES IN AUSTRALIA THE DOMINION'S BEST New Zealand has left its mat k on this year's racing in Sydney and Melbourne. It has done so before, but rarely to the same extent all round, comments "Pilot" in the Sydney Referee. Dominion representatives have included the best three-year-old of the autumn (Defaulter), the best two-year-old (High Caste), and Melbourne Cup (Catalogue), Metropolitan (Royal Chief >. and Warwick Farm Autumn Cup (Malagigi) winners. Admitting only good horses are, as rule, sent over, it has been demonstrated that those from New Zealanu can still more than hold their own against most of our best. It has been fortunate for Australia that Ajax has stood in the way in w.f.a. races. Although not young horses, Catalogue and Malagigi seemingly improved during their snort stay in Australia, though many New Zealanders will not have it so. contending that they really did nothing more than they had' shown at home, and that theii deeds merely confirmed the all-rounc. superiority of Dominion horses. Il was regrettable that Nuffield was - not among Defaulter's three-year-olc ] opponents, but the latter s A.J.C. Plate win removed any possible doubt las to his class. Although Mosaic won I the Sydney Cup with weight-for-age, I he failed to trouble Defaulter when he 'met him on level terms on Saturday. | The presence of New Zealand horses adds spice to racing at RanaI wick, and it is to be hoped that in the spring we shall see not only Defaulter, but Royal Chief and Beaupartir among the w.f.a. runners. It is regrettable that the Dominion s best two-year-old colt, Beau livre, is not in the A.J.C. Derby, but Beau Vile is. and, fiom what I can gather from New Zealand exchanges, the idea obtains that he will develop into a ; stayer. I
