FIRE BRIGADE ‘LADIES’ NIGHT” PLEASING SOCIAL FUNCTION (Own Correspondent.) TAIHAPE, March 21. A pleasing ceremony took place in the Fire Brigade Hall on Friday evening, when the annual “Ladies’ Night" was held, there being a good attendance of firemen and their wives and friends. The evening took the form of a dance, the music being supplied by Mr. R. Webb, while extras were played by Mr. C. Murray. The programme included a Monte Carlo waltz won by Miss Torrey and Fireman L. McMillan, and a spot waltz, the winners of the latter event being Miss D. Mortland and W. Sinclair. A tasty supper was a feature of the evening. During an interval Supt. Mortland presented Assistant-Foreman B. W. Flight with two hearth rugs on behalf of the brigade. In making the presentation, Supt. Mortland said that the recipient had been a member of the brigade for 15 years during which time he had proved himself an excellent fireman and competition man. He had risen to the position of assist-ant-foreman by sheer merit and ability and had taken a prominent part in all the brigade’s activities. Mrs. Flight had been a good worker at social functions held under the auspices of the brigade and both she and her husband would be greatly missed. The speaker wished Mr. and Mrs. Flight and family every success and happiness in their new home at Tokaanu. Foreman-Secretary Adair spoke in a similar strain. In responding Assistant-Foreman Flight said that he would always treasure the gift which he had received from the brigade and should he visit Taihape in the future he would make a point of renewing old friendships with the brigade members. PRESENTATION TO MR. B. W. FLIGHT 24 YEARS’ RAILWAY SERVICE On lhe eve of his departure for Tokaanu, Mr. B. W. Flight was presented with a dinner set by the fitting and running staff of the Taihape Railway Locomotive Department. Mr. Flight has been in the railway service for 24 years of which 17 have been spent at Taihape, but he has now resigned to enter into business at Tokaanu as a garage proprietor. The presentation was made by Mr. F. J. Golder, locomotive foreman at Taumarunui, who paid a tribute to Mr. Flight’s long service in the railway and- wished him the best of luck in the future. Mr. G. B. Munro, assistant-locomo-tive foreman, and Messrs. A. W. Mack, S. Bolt (running staff) and B. L. Hamlin (fitting staff) also spoke. Mr. Flight was presented with a condiment set. Mr. Flight returned thanks for the gift and expressions of esteem and goodwill accompanying it, and added that he was sorry to leave Taihape after many pleasant years' association with the railway staff. MISHAP AT TAIHAPE SPORTS While competing in the horse jumping events at the Taihape St. Patrick’s Day sports on Saturday Mr. R. Guthrie, of Hihitahi, was thrown heavily to the ground when his mount failed to clear one of the hurdles, and suffered two fractured ribs. After receiving medical attention the injured rider was taken home. INCIPIENT FIRE The Taihape Fire Brigade received a call to the residence of Mr. A. M. Ryan in the Main South Road about 7 o’clock on Sunday evening and found the breastwork below the kitchen mantelpiece on fire. The blaze was quickly extinguished by means of a fire extinguisher, lit.t’e damage be* ing done. TENNIS NOTES TAIHAPE DEFEAT HUNTERVILLE Taihape proved far too strong for Hunterville in the first inter-club match for the de Lautour Cup played at Taihape during the week-end. Each team was comprised of six men and six ladies and the home side distinguished itself by winning every match. The visitors were officially welcomed by the president of the Taihape Tennis Club, Mr. L. E. Lyons, who hoped that the handsome trophy donated by Mr. de Lautour would be the means of stimulating interest in inter-club competitions. Mr. Lyons explained that Taihape were the first holders of the cup according to the rules of the competition, and added that a debt of gratitude was due to Mr. de Lautour for presenting the cup. At the conclusion of play Mr. Lyons presented the cup to Mr. N. Lelievre, who accepted the trophy on behalf of the Taihape team. Mr. Chisholm congratulated the victors on behalf of the Hunterville Club and also thanked the Taihape Club for their warm hospitality. Results are as follow.
