SPORT AT RAETIHI

BUTLER SHIELD TENNIS MAIvH (Own Correspondent.) RAETIHI, March 6. The fifth match for the Butler Shield was played at Ohakune on Sunday between the home team and a team from Raetihi. Three matches could not be completed owing to the failing light but as Raetihi were leading by 11 sets to 10 when play was abandoned they were declared the winners. The position of the shield matches is now as under: Raetihi, 2 wins and 1 loss; Ohakune, 2 wins and 1 loss; Ohakune Junction, 1 win and 3 losses. It will be necessary for the Raetihi and Ohakune teams to play a further match to decide which club is to hold the shield for the ensuing year. Details of Sunday’s play are as follow, Ohakune players being mentioned first:—

Several of the matches were shortened in an endeavour to permit them all to be played before darkness set in. CROQUET RAETIHI v. OHAKUNE On Saturday last the Raetihi Croquet Club unsuccessfully challenged the Ohakune Club for the King Country Cup. The day was beautifully fine and the visitors were most hospitably entertained by the Ohakune ladies. The results were as follow, Raetihi players being mentioned first:— Singles.—Mrs. Sandford 16. lost to, Mrs. Curran 26; Mrs. Stewart 4, lost to Mrs. Bayne 26; Mrs. Ciochetto 4, lost to Mrs. Bradshaw 26; Mrs. Marshall 26, beat Mrs. Lightband 23. Doubles.—Mesdames Sa<ndford and Marshall 19, lost to Mesdames Curran and Bradshaw 26; Mesdames Stewart and Ciochetto 3, lost to Mesdames Lightband and Bayne 26. The usual complimentary speeches were made by Mrs. Becker (president of the Ohakune Croquet Club) and Mrs. Sandford (Raetihi Croquet Club captain). BOWLING RAETIHI v. TAUMARUNUI On Sunday last five rinks of players from the Raetihi Club journeyed to Taumarunui to engage in a return inter-club match. The Taumarunui Club was victorious on the day in winning three matches out of the five. On the aggregate of points they scored 112 points to Pvaetihi’s 96. At the conclusion of the match Mr. T. S. Fagg (president of the Raetihi Club) presented the victors with a cup to market heir victory.
