FRANKLIN RACING CLUB

MEETING AT PUKEKOHE FINE FIELDS ENGAGED REVIEW OF THE CARD (Special to “Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, Friday. The Auckland provincial circuit will be oentinued at Fukekohe tomorrow, when the Franklin Racing Club’s autumn fixture will be hcla. The acceptances received on Wednesday evening are very satisfactory and in the Bombay Handicap, for maidens, a division race has been averted oy one only, the safety number being two dozen. The going will be very fast unless rain falls, and win-and-place betting will operate. An extraordinary feature of the big race, the Franklin Cup, is that of the 13 horses out of an entry of 31 that were placed above the minimum, only four survived the acceptance, so that obviously there is a big tail in the 15-horse field, all but 11 being on the minimum, but as there are several improveds in the latter division they will help to make it interesting. Topweight in the Franklin Cup is Master Brierly, winner at Te Aroha last Monday, and he will be racing on his home track, so that he will have every opportunity again. Lady Montana appeals considerably in tne now much-weakened field, tor she ran solid races at Te Rapa (second to Scotland) and Te Aroha, and as the race now is she could almost be regarded as a good thing. DaiK Shadow has been racing without much success of late, but he, too, will appreciate this contest. Knight of Australia had his last race at Ellerslie five weeks ago, finishing eighth in a field of 13 in the Ralph Handicap, won by Cheval de Volee. The Windbag gelding won this race two years ago and he is not too backward now. Of the many on the minimum those that appear to have the best chances are Gay Rebel, High Sea, Miss Appellant and Glen Abb, while Bonstar is improving as a stayer, and Grand City may go well. However, the event has lizzied out rather badly, doubtless due to the fact that most of the handicap horses have had enough racing on hard tracks during tne past couple ol

months. Laay Montana appears to stand out in this field. A much better field comparatively stands its ground in the Pukekohe Handicap, the open sprint, and Gay Chou and Orate are rated nearly equal, with the latter in receipt of a pound and at tnal he will not be oui of it. Gay Chou went good races al Te Aroha and he may improve just a little so as to be able to overcome the almost moderate opposition. Tosh is still nicely placed despite victories at Rotorua anu Te Aroha and a placing at Te Rapa, so he should receive plenty of support. Maori Song continues to run seconds and his turn is now due. The thre-year-old Philcourt has had time to freshen up and may go well, and the same applies to Lornacre. Olympus should be all the better for his race at Te Aroha last Monday, when he finished sixth over seven furlongs, and he is going to cary a strong recommendation. Erndale, Tepoto, Aero King, Oriental Bay, Little Artist and Royal Vaals are more than useful lightweights. Tosh and Olympus are favoured. Thgj.opening event, the Waiuku Hack, should see High Delight snowing up, and Airam will take beating in the Hurdles with all her weight, in the Bombay Hack Empire Action and Rival may race prominently, although early brilliancy will be a prime essential for victory m this large Held. The Tuakau Stakes is another event where beginning ability will be the race half won, and in this respect Sir Lysander and Hunter's Rose may be best served. The staying hacks are catered for in the Dynes Fu.wn Handicap, and a pair handily place: 1 are Royal Abb and Master Appellant. Corato has a lot of pace and he may prove capable of carrying his weight in the final contest, the Buckland Hack.
