TAIHAPE FITNESS WEEK

SPECTACULAR PARADE AND DEMON STRATTON (Own Correspondent.) TAIHAPE, March 3. “Fitness Week’’ celebrations concluded on Thursday with a spectacular procession through the streets of Taihape, followed by a demonstration on the Recreation Ground, including a colourful physical drill display and tableau by the pupils of the Taihape District High School, under the capable direction of Mr. D. G. Revell. Open air dancing and tugs-of-war were held in the evening as a climax' to the day’s activities. The parade was marshalled in Huia Street, opposite the school, by Capt. R. B. Schulze, who led the procession through the town to the Oval Domain followed by the Taihape Band. Then came the following units in the order mentioned: Primary boys, primary girls, secondary boys, secondary girls, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, Scouts, Cubs, Convent School, Taihape Amateur Athletic Club, Otaihape Alpine Club, baseball club, Taihape Tennis Club, Taihape Bowling Club, Borough Council, fire brigade, Returned Soldiers, St, John Ambulance and territorials. Perhaps the highlight of the display 1 was the presentation of the living . monogram T.D.H.S., which had to be seen to be properly appreciated. The physical drill demonstration incorporated folk dances by the senior girls, and dance numbers by the primary pupils. Other interesting events were a demonstration by the Taihape Volunteer Fire Brigade, and an exhibition of baseball by two ladies’ teams. Musical selections were contributed by the Taihape Band. Among the novelty events was a wheelbarrow derby and a potato race. Mr. R. Finn acted as starter for the athletic programme, while the judges were Messrs. J. Menzies, H. R. Rush, W. A. Smith. Mr. R. TAIHAPE REST ROOM At a meeting of the Rest Room Committee, on Wednesday evening, a motion was passed to Ihe effect that Ihe committee was prepared to hand over its funds to the centennial committee provided that the money was handed back if the Government subsidy on the rest room was not available. The Mayor slated at the public meeting, on Wednesday lo discuss Taihape's centennial memorial, that he had been assured that the Government would grant I he full subsidy on the rest room as a centennial memorial.
