REPUDIATION OF LOANS
ALLEGED THREAT WHY MR. NORMAN WENT TO BERLIN LONDON, Jan. 13. The Daily Herald alleges that Mr. Montagu Norman, Governor of the Bank of England, went to Berlin because of a threat by Germany to force a crisis among a group of private British banks by repudiating the £40,000,000 short-term loans owing by Germany unless Dr. Schacht’s refugee plan was supported. The newspaper adds that Mr. Norman will probably try to launch a deal for assisting the German export trade with the ostensible object of helping the Jews to emigrate.
