TROPICAL BIRD

CAPTURE AND ESCAPE [ Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Jan. 4. Caught on board the passenger steamer Tainui when off the Panama coast recently, a valuable tropical bird which was being brought to Auckland for presentation to the zoo escaped from its cage and was lost, according to Dr. J. S. Hudson, the ship's surgeon on the Tainui, which arrived from Southampton to-day. The bird was an American species of marsh bird.. Dr. Hudson, who is an honorary collector for the London Zoo, said the bird was of a particularly beautiful type. Small in size, its plumage was highly coloured, blue, pink and yellow being the predominating colours. It came on board when the ship was 120 miles from land—a remarkable flight for a bird with comparatively weak wings. Strange enough Dr. Hudson added, he had caught a similar bird in the same way on board the ship when off the coast of Brazil last June. This bird was now in the London Zoo, being one of only two on exhibition.

While in Auckland Dr. Hudson will approach the Auckland Zoo authorities with a view to securing birds for the London Zoo.
