BIG BLAZE AT WAIROA

FIRE CAUSES MUCH DAMAGE INTERIOR OF SHOPS DESTROYED HASTINGS, Jan. 4. Damage to the extent of more than £lOOO was caused by a fire which broke out in the premises of Mr. W. H. Flint, tobacconist and hairdresser, Marine Parade, Wairoa, late yesterday afternoon. The interior ot the shop was almost completely destroyed. The sounding of the siren gave the alarm at about 4.45 p.m. and the Wairoa Fire Brigade, in full muster, rushed to the scene. Not noticed until it was well under way, the fire had complete charge of the shop on the brigade's arrival. Within a few minutes of the alarm, hundreds of people assembled on the Marine Parade and cars lined the streets. Good Work by Brigade Working skilfully with fire-axes ana the large hose, members of the brigade did good work in quenching the flames and in preventing the spread of the fire to the billiard room at the rear of the premises. The front portion of the building, in which it is believed the fire originated, suffered severely, and extensive damage to the ceiling and walls was done in the hairdressing saloon. Stock Damaged A great amount of stock was damaged, including valuable sports equipment. Yesterday was a holiday in the town, and the shop was closed. The building was insured for £l2OO, and the stock and fittings for £1725, with the Royal Exchange Insurance Coy. This is the ninety-ninth fire in Wairoa since the inception of the fire brigade 12 years ago. DON’T FORGET THAT IDEA’ Ideas—even simple ones—are bringing fortunes to their lucky possessors.
