Acting on instructions from Wasnington, Mr. William Phillips, American Ambassador in Rome, called on Signor Mussolini and had a talk lasting 40 minutes. One report says that Mr. Phillips handed Signor Mussolini a personal message from President Roosevelt containing certain concrete proposals, but the United States Embassy refuses information, declaring that any announcement regarding the convetsation must come from Washington. According to the London Daily Mail’s Rome correspondent, the conversation concerned certain aspects oi the Dictators' regime in Europe, which, Mr. Phillips emphasised, were causing disquiet to America. Questions affecting the United States trade with Italy were also discussed. The meeting is described as friendly and generally aimed at securing a better understanding between the two continents. The Rome correspondent of the News-Chronicle, says that it is understood that Mr. Phillips, who recentlyreturned from a visit to America, expressed President Roosevelt's gravest concern at the present situation in Europe, especially reports current m Washington that Italy and Germany were planning further sensational activities in the spring.
