FORMER MEMBER OF GENERAL SIR A. RUSSELL’S STAFF [ Far Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Jan. 2. Once a member of Major-General Russell’s staff at Gallipoli, Brigadier P. M. McFarlane, C.8.E., of the Australian staff corps, arrived by the Narkunda. Now commandant of Western Australia, he is on a health cruise and was not -prepared to discuss Australia’s defence preparations. He said that a total force of 70,000 was required and was confident that Western Australia would find its quota. "When I left, recruiting was in full swing,” he said. He added that Fremantle was regarded as one of the best defended spots in the Empire.
