FIRE AT WAVERLEY

DAIRY FACTORY MANAGER’S RESIDENCE AN EAKLY MORNING BLAZE Further misfortunte befell the Waverley Co-operative Dairy Company early on Wednesday morning when the residence of the manager of the factory (Mr. W. G. Gaitt) was gutted by fire. Earlier in the year the factory itself was destroyed and a new building has just been completed. Mr. and Mrs. Gaitts were awakened early in the morning by smoke and a smell of burning wood. They discovered that the house was on lire. It was built with a rough cast exterior and the draught was not so great as would have been the case had the structure been wholly made of wood, and Mr. and Mrs. Gaitts were able to save some of their furniture and effects. A call was sent to the Waverlcx Fire Brigade, which responded prompt - ly, but that was of little avail as the house was outside the town boundary and no water pressure was available. Quite a crowd assembled at the scene of the fire and gave valuable assistance in the removal of some of the contents of the house to places of safety. It is believed that the fire started in the washhouse. The house was comparatively new and Mr. Gaitts had just recently moved into it, having been appointed manager of the factory a short while ago. Insurances were not available last night, but it is understood that both building and contents were covered.
