HOSPITAL BOARD FINANCE

SOCIAL SECURITY SCHEME MINISTER’S ASSURANCE [ Per Press Association.! AUCKLAND, Oct. 25. An assurance that when details of the social security proposals were being formulated, full regard would be given to the effect on hospital board finance generally of the legislation, was given by the Minister of HealiX, Hon. P. Fraser, in a letter received by the Auckland Hospital Board. Mr. Fraser’s explanation was in reply to a resolution passed by the board that the allowance of 6s per day for each patient receiving free hospital treatment under the scheme was inadequate to meet the cost. “The rate of payment for hospital treatment will undoubtedly be determined. having due consideration to the sums to be provided by the levy on local authorities,’’ the Minister stated. “I shall be pleased to ensure that consideration is given to the suggestion of the board that a graduated scale of payments should be made on account of the fact that certain of the major hospitals will be involved in a much' higher expenditure for specialist and i out-patient services.” “I would say, however,” he added. ;

“that it is believed that in respect of in-patients the uniform daily rate will be found reasonably equitable and at the same time it will make for simpler administration.” “The Minister obviously intends to treat the hospital boards fairly,” said Dr. Hastings, “they have no reason to worry unduly about the matter.” The letter was received.
