GERMAN COLONIES

RETURN DEMANDED NO FURTHER FORMULATION POLICY OF MAINTENANCE OF BRITISH EMPIRE [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrightj BERLIN, Oct. 12. An authoritative statement of the German colonial policy from an official making contact with the highest quarters emphasises the German demands for the return of all colonies of which she was deprived and adds: “Herr Adolf Hitler can be regarded as having made the demand; therefore further formulation cannot be expected.” This reference is apparently to the Hitler-Chamberlain conversations in Godesberg, when Herr Hitler said: “There is one awkward question—colonies —but it is not a matter for war.” In expectation of the colonial question being settled early in Germany’s favour. Dr. Hjalmar Schacht has established a department of the Reichsba<nk to study the problems of the new colonial currencies. A spokesman gave an assurance that there is no intention of increasing the German Fleet beyond the limits of the Anglo-German Treaty. Even if Germany is again a colonial power the maintenance of the British Empire is a positive factor in German policy.

“HANDS OFF AFRICA” CAMPAIGN UNION PARTIES ACTIVE OPPOSITION TO ANY CESSION MOVES. DURBAN, Oct. 12. The "Hands oft Africa’’ campaign is gaining momentum. Palitical parties have formed a truce and Dominionites, Socialists, and members of the United Party held a mass meeting to demontrate their opposition to any cession moves. Three thousand civilians in a petition made a similar protest. In Dar-es-Salem (Tanganyika) natives are carrying Union Jacks, and loyal citizens of the British mandate held an orderly demonstration throughout the city last night. A London message states that the executive of the joint East African Board, expressing the determination to resist the cession of Tanganyika to Germany, urges the organisation of an influential body representative of the views of both Britons and Africans who are alarmed at the suggestion of cession, and draws attention to the strategic and economic consequences thereof. The board emphasises that undertakings of the permanence of British administration were given the natives by Governors and Cabinet members.
