PACIFIC DEFENCE LINES
U.S. CO-OPERATION WITH BRITAIN AND FRANCE AMERICAN DESTROYER TO VISIT AUCKLAND [ Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Oct. 10. Advice has been received by th'. United States Consul at Auckland, Mr J. G. Groeninger, that the Americai destroyer Maury will arrive here oi October 31 for a week’s visit during t cruise of the South Pacific. The cruise of the Maury is included in a series of long-distance exercise, to be conducted by the United Stale; Navy in the Pacific—one of a number of moves to be made by the Unite< States for consolidation of aerial ant naval defence lines in the Pacific will those of Britain and France. The departure of the Maury on s secret mission was announced las month in a caole message from Honolulu. The Maury, which is under tin command of Lieutenant-Commandei E. M. Thompson, was the first of < number of the Maury class launchei in the 1935 programme. She is of 150( tons displacement and her 42,8 U( horse-power engines are capable c driving her at 361 knots. The de stroyer carries five 5-inch guns, eigh 21-inch torpedo tubes and eigh machine-guns. Her complement total: 190.
