DEFEAT OF “DRYS”

VICTORIA NO-LICENCE POLL RESULT END OF VIGOROUS CAMPAIGN MELBOURNE, Oct. 10. A no-licence poll is taken according to the law of Victoria every eigh; years. It was held on Saturday on the question: “That licences be abolished.” The result was an overwhelming defeat of the drys. Three-fifths of the valid votes a:-, required to pass a “no-licence” law but at the last count, with more thar 1,000,000 votes counted, only 34 pc: cent, favoured abolition of licences the figures then being: Against nolicence, 659,837; for no-licence, 34.1,530 At the last poll in 1930 the vote; for no-licence was 43 per cent. A vigorous campaign was conducted u: the last four weeks, both sides spending huge sums on newspaper and radio advertising. The no-licence side required about 649,000 votes to win. One of the principal factors leading to the defeat of the no-licence party is believed to be that a loss of employment of 26,000 persons engaged in the liquor trade throughout Victori:, would be involved. .
