PARTIES’ LOSSES NOW EQUAL APPROACH TO HANKOW [By Telegraph—Presse Association—Copyright) HANKOW, Oct. 9. General Chen, the Chinese com-mander-in-chief in this area, asserts that 750,000 Japanese have been killed and wounded in the course of the campaign, including 350,000 in tjje Yangtze Valley.
General Chen adds that the losses on both sides are now evenlj maintained, whereas .he fighting near Shanghai in 1937 showed a ratio of 3 to 1 against the Chinese. Japan now had 1,000,000 troops in China, of which 600,000 were employed in the drive against Hankow, A message from Shanghai states that the occupation of Wulitien by the Japanese completes the encirclement of Sinyang. Each side lost thousands killed in the efforts by the Chinese to recapture the Liulin and Tungshanghao railway stations. The Japanese bombed Canton, killing 20 and wounding 75. The correspondent of the Daily Telegraph at Hongkong reports that Japanese penetrated the Tapieh Pass leading directly to the Chinese headquarters at Macheng, twenty miles away. The capture of the pass opens an excellent highway to Hankow. CHINESE CASUALTIES. LONDON, Oct. 9. The Tokio correspondent of The Times says it is officially reported that the Chinese killed from August 20 to October 3 numbered 68,737. CAPTURE OF TEHAN. Received Oct. 10, 5.5 p.m. HANKOW, Oct. 9. The Japanese have occupied Tehan.
