WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT FATEA At the monthly meeting of the Patea Women’s Institute on Friday, the singing of the National Anthem as a tribute to the peaceful negotiations made in England opened the meeting. The president, Mrs. A. Carey, welcomed Mrs. A. Tidswe'll, a Kakaramea visitor, new members, Mesdames G. Clarke and Brierley, and Mrs. H. Peacocke, who had been ill. Sympathy in her illness was passed with Mrs. G. W. Corbett. In accepting Mrs. A. H. BrookeTaylor’s resignation with regret, good health and prosperity were wished Her in her new home in Wellington. Invitations were received to the Turi township display of arts on October 22, Ohangi birthday on October 22, and Te Roti birthday on October 31. Agenda for the South Taranaki Federation meeting at Kaponga on October 26 was read. Miss Amy Kane, president of the New Zealand Women’s Institute, wrote explaining that the publishers of “Home and Country,” who let the advertising, had accepted a political advertisement for the September issue. This was a mistake as politics were not allowed to enter into W.I. affairs and an advertisement from the opposing party would appear in

the October issue to counterbalance. An article on ‘‘Hydatids” was read by Mrs. W. White for the Golden Thread, “Physical Hygiene.” At the next meeting of the Arts and Crafts Circle “petal” organdie will be continued and the Garden Circle reported that the Reserve and Triangle were in good order but plants were required for the latter.

Mrs. Tidswell gave an interesting demonstration on soft metal work, displaying excellent examples of her work.

It was decided to hold the December meeting on Tuesday, the sixth, instead of Friday, when it would be Pioneers’ Day and a display of arts and crafts. In the evening plays and sketches are to be presented. Competitions resulted: Best bloom: Mrs. Meuli 1, Mrs. C. Derrett 2, Mrs. L. Adams 3. Article from flour bag: Miss Hilliar 1, Mrs. Hilliar 2. Sponge cake: Mrs. Gray 1, Mrs. G. Hurley 2. Travelling Is: Mrs. Cardiff.

Hostesses were Mesdames G. Laing. E. Lankshear, Misses K. and E. Lavery and W. Lawson. November hostesses will be Mesdames R. E. Moore, C. S. Martin, G. Mercer, R. Mays, O. Meuli, F. Mairs, I. Jones.
