DEFAULTER'S GUINEAS

OPPOSITION OUTCLASSED Defaulter outclassed his three opponents on Saturday in the Dunedin Guineas, for which he was at a short price. Withdrawal was slightly left but she soon ran up behind ToroKoura, who led until well inside the distance. Dunstan drifted to the rear and Defaulter was nursed in third place. Defaulter soon measured off the leaders in the straight and was being eased at the post, where Dunstan made a vain attempt to head off Toro-Koura. Withdrawal was pulled up in the straight. After the race Mr. A. C. Hanlon, president of the home club, paid a tribute to the memory of the late Mr. J. B. Reid, who presented a gold cup to go with the stakes. Mr. Reid was an old and very much esteemed pat- . ron of the sport, and a pioneer breeder of bloodstock whose importations made the Elderslie Stud one of the most successful nurseries of the thoroughbred • in the Southern Hemisphere.
