FINGLETON’S 1000 RUNS AUSTRALIA SENT 'N TO BAT MATCH WITH SURREY (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright* LONDON, Aug. 11. Sent in to bat on a wicket which was expected to become tricky, the Australian batsmen were not troubled by the conditions when their match against Surrey was commenced at the Oval to-day, a day’s play having been lost yesterday owing to rain. The weather was fine, but it was not possible to start play until 2.15 p.m., and when stumps were drawn before 6 o’clock Australia had made 201 for four wickets. The teams are: Australia.- S. J. The Oval wicket is notorious for bad behaviour when sunshine follows rain. Consequently it was not. surprising when Holmes sent Australia in. The wicket, however, ployed well. I Fingieton, when hj had made 9. reached his long-delayed 1000 runs for the tour. The opening batsmen hao scored 64 before Fingieton was out. Brown and Hassett soon followed, but then McCabe and Barnes became j associated in a partnership which reai Used 93 runs. Both batted attractively and the bowling appeared to bo mastered when Barnes called for a short single, which McCabe responded to and was run out.
