PADISHAH’S HURDLES

A NOVICE WINNER UNIQUE NATIONAL VICTORY (Special to "Chronicle.' 1 ) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 12. Padishah has been named as a Grand National Hurdles winner for many months past. With his possibilities well exposed to those who closely watched his second on Tuesday, he was backed down to second favouritism yesterday, and he registered one of the most facile wins recorded in the race in recent years. It is the first time, as far as could be ascertained on the course, that a novice jumper has won the Dominion’s premier hurdling event. It was a case of a proved stayer on the fiat eclipsing his more experienced jumping rivals. He was having only his fifth race over fences in public, so his performance was a most unusual one. As a four-year-old he had two starts in the role, and then prior to yesterday's race he had two more outings, in one of which he came to grief. Ellis* Judgment. The services of A. E. Ellis were secured for Padishah in the race, and this was a helpful factor. Ellis eariy did not show any desire to mix it with the field and kept his mount out on the track, with a clear sight of every fence. The gelding was jumping splendidly all the way, and he was never so far away from the leaders. It was about the six-furlong post that Ellis really began to move him. and his superior class on the flat so quickly ate up the ground that he was running past Erination to the front half a mile from home and with only one fence remaining. That fence perfectly negotiated, the race i was all over so far as knowing the i winner. Fireguard's Showing. 1 Fireguard owed his second placing : to stamina. He was at the rear during most of the early running, but he ‘ I was making up leeway steadily ovci | the last five furlongs and he oustayed ’; Clarion Call and Erination to the | post. Clarion Call did not seem to be [ handling the going at all well for more than half the trip, drifting from a forward position to last except Fireguard. Erination was the pacemaker nearly all the way, but though he hung or, gamely he lost a dividend placing b_. '! a short length.
