SECONDARY SCHOOLS TOUR OF AUSTRALIA QUESTION OF GUARANTEES CHATHAM CUP COMPETITION [ Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 19. Details of the forthcoming Australian tour by the New Zealand secondary schoolboys’ soccer team were discussed at to-day’s meeting of the Council of the N.Z. Football Association, when correspondence was read from the Auckland, Canterbury and Otago Associations. Otago stated that because of the difficulty over finance they could not possibly guarantee £lO a head for each boy. It was reported from another source, however, that money for three of the Otago nominees would be found by parents of the boys. The Canterbury Association expressed the opinion that it would be more desirable to postpone the tour till 1939, and Auckland wrote stating that they could not guarantee even £5 a boy. After some discussion the council decided to adhere to the decision to grant £l5O for the tour and to pay in addition £3O towards the expenses of two managers. The organising of the tour is to be handed over to the North and South Island Secondary Schools’ Associations, who are to arrange for the selection of the team. A letter was received from the South Auckland Association advising that, because the Chatham Cup match between Huntly Starr United and Hamilton Wanderers had had to be replayed in accordance with the council's decision following a protest by Wanderers that the other team had played two unregistered players, the Auckland v. South Auckland match would have to be put back till July 30 and the North Island final till August 6. The association asked whether, in the event of a South Auckland finalist surviving, the North Island final would be played at Hamilton and not at Auckland. The council approved the altered dates and the secretary, Mr. A. Williams, reported that he had advised South Auckland that in the event of a South Auckland team beating the Auckland finalist the North Island final would be played at Hamilton.
