BOXING

WANGANUI ASSOCIATION TWO BOUTS ARRANGED FIRST TOURNEY NEXT WEEK The newly-revived Wanganui Boxing Association will hold its first tournament next week, when two professional bouts and five amateur preliminaries will be staged. The Opera House will be the scene of these fistic battles, and Wednesday, July 27, will be the date of the tournament. L. McLachlan, of Auckland, and Pat Murphy, of Ireland, will be seen in a bout scheduled to cover ten threeminute rounds, and T. Carvin, of Wellington, will meet Joe Hansen, also of Wellington, in eight threeminute rounds. These two professional bouts alone should attract a large crowd, but in addition there will be five amateur preliminaries, the contestants including some of the best amateurs from Taihape, Palmerston North and Wanganui. The referee for the bouts will be Mr. C. Cann, well known among boxers, both professional and amateur, throughout the Dominion. Since its revival last month the Wanganui Boxing Association has received generous support from boxing enthusiasts in the district, and it is reported that the membership is already in the vicinity of three hundred. Undoubtedly the forthcoming tournament at the Opera House will give the membership another fillip.
