RANGITIKEI COUNTY

FIRST MEETING OF NEW COUNCIL YESTERDAY.

The newly - elected Rangitikei County Council met yesterday for the first time when a special meeting was called to consider estimates for the current year. Cr. K., W. Dalrymple presided over Crs. J. Brice, A. S. Coleman, W. Doole, V. Smith, A. D. Mair, L. E. Deacon, G. L. Marshall, R. G. Dalziell, the engineer Mr. S. A. R. Mair, and the clerk (Mr. H. H. Richardson).

The chairman, in welcoming the four new councillors, Crs. Mair, Marshall, Smith and Deacon, to the table, said it was many years since the per-

sonnel of the council was changed by four members at one time. Firstly the ratepayer wanted to know what the council did with all the money, but what the council had to consider was what could be done with the little money that they had to spend.

The chairman told the new councillors that Messrs. Mair and Richardson would be of every assistance when matters came up for discussion, while the old councillors would gladly assist and show the new members how the council was run. The world was changing, said the chairman, and the council would have to change with it. The council always tried to meet In the broadest possible way to get the best possible result.

The chairman concluded his remarks by expressing a hope that the new men would find the work of an interesting nature. Crs. Marshall, Mair, Deacon ana Smith replied to the welcome. Cr. Marshall said he understood that “peace, perfect peace” remained at the council table, while a ratepayer had told him that the council needed more ginger.

It was decided to place on record, appreciation of the work rendered to the council by Mesdames J. D. Lilburn and J. McHardy. Cr. Coleman remarked that he had the greatest respect for the men of the northern area. They had attended regularly and had taken a keen interest in the administration affairs of the council. The council then went into committee to discuss the estimates for the period ending, March 31, 1939. The chairman said it was just a preliminary meeting and further discussion would be allowed at a later meeting.
