COUNTY ESTIMATES

The Rangitikei County Council spent the major portion of yesterday afternoon discussing in committee, estimates lor the current year. At the conclusion of the discussion the clerk and engineer were instructed to complete the estimates having regard to suggestions made for bridges ana workmens cottages and provide fox any other items necessary and make adequate provision for contingencies. The hospital rate was fixed at l-3d in the £ for the ensuing year. Special rates of id and 9-16 d. were

made respectively tor the Erewhon and Ruanui Ridings. When dealing with contingencies not provided for in the estimates for the county clerk’s department, the item of contributing towards the Early Settlers’ Memorial Fund for the purpose of erecting a pioneers’ memorial on Mount Stewart, was raised. Cr. A. S. Coleman moved the following notice of motion, “That the resolution passed by the council on April 7, 1938, viz.: ‘That this council while appreciating to the full extent the very fine services rendered to this country by the early pioneers, doos not teel disposed to contribute towards the erection of a memorial in the form of a monument on Mourn Stewart, but would favourably consider contributing towards the erection of, say, a nurses’ home or some useful building at Wanganui or Palmerston North Public Hospitals which, in the opinion of this council, would be a more fitting memorial,’ be rescinded.” The chairman, Cr. K. W. Dalrymple, intimated that he would be waipiti hunting in the fiord district of Southland next month and asked fo? leave of absence at the next meeting of the council on June 2. Granted. At a meeting of the Koitiata Domain Board, at a special sitting of the Rangitikei County Council yesterday, the engineer was instructed to report to the board upon outstanding rates. Cr. G. L. Marshall, in conjunction with the engineer (Mr S. A. R. Mair) are to report upon the matter of planting on the Domain.
