FIRE AT SPRING CREEK
FERRY HOTEL DESTROYED [ Per Association. I BLENHEIM, May 24. The Ferry Hotel, Spring Creek, a two-storey wooden building containing 12 rooms, was destroyed by tire at 3.30 o'clock this morning. The hotel, which stood on the bank of the Wairau River for the past 50 yearn, was owned by Mrs Jane Basings, Auckland, and was occupied by Mr Norman L. Emms. The insurance oi, the building was £B5O in the Atlas Company, with £lOOO on the contents and stock in the Royal Company. Mr Emms, his wife, daughter, ana a friend were the only people on the premises. Mrs Emms was awakened by the glare from the flames, which were already bursting through the window’s downstairs. Apart from the clothing they hurriedly donned, they had no time’ to save anything except a handful of notes, which the licensee grabbed from the safe, leaving about £3O in silver. Evidently the outbreak began in the kitchen or dining room, and, with no means ot extinguishing it available, made a clean sweep of the entire premise's.
