PROVINCIAL PAPERS FAIR

NO COMPLAINT BY GOVERNMENT HON. P. C. WEBB’S STATEMENT HAWERA, May 24. “In. my broadcast statement criticising the attitude of the Press towards the Labour Government, I was referring to the metropolitan Press. The provincial papers have been fair in their treatment of the Government,” said the Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Mines, when questioned on his arrival at Hawera by ’plane to-day to open the South Taranaki Winter Show. The complaint of the Government was against the city newspapers, and he had made that point clear in hitbroadcast address last week, said the Minister. When referred to a statement made in Hawera early in the month by Mi A. F. Moncur, M.P. for Rotorua, that “we have nothing against the provincial papers, for the provincial Press gives everyone a fair hearing, irrespective of the political creed,” the Hon. Webb confirmed this attitude. Mr Moncur further stated that the metropolitan papers were “unfair” and “one-eyed’ - ’ and urged the people to give their support to their own local paper, which was a provincial paper. The newspapers of the provinces performed a useful service ana circulated among people in the country districts where there was a large divergence of ideas.
