POLITICAL REFUGEES

QUESTIONS IN COMMONS MR. CHAMBERLAIN’S REPLY LONDON, May 23. In the House of Commons, Miss E. Rathbone asked Mr Neville Chamberlain to consider convening a conference of representatives of the Dominions for the purpose of formulating an imperial policy regarding political refugees. Mr Chamberlain replied: “The admission of refugees is a matter for each of His Majesty’s Governments to decide in the light of local conditions. An opportunity of discussing some aspects will be afforded at the intergovernmental meeting in July, to which, I understand, the Governments of the Dominions will be invited.” MR. SAVAGE'S COMMENT [Ter Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 24. Interviewed regarding the cable message concerning political refugees, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage said that he agreed with Mr Chamberlain that it was largely a matter for the countries concerned. “Britain cannot tell us what we want here.” When the conference mentioned in the cable was held, New Zealano would be represented. Under the existing law in New Zealand, intending immigrants from foreign countries were expected to make application to the Minister of Customs for admission before leaving their own country.
