ATTEMPTED ESCAPE
CONVICTS AT ALCATRAZ Received May 24, 7.57 p.m. SAN FRANCISCO, May 23. Two convicts were wounded and a guard critically injured when three prisoners made an unsuccessful attempt to escape from Alcatraz prison. The prisoners, all of whom were bank robbers, struck the guard in the wordworking shop on the head with a hammer, fracturing his skull. They climbed up on the roof where another guard shot two of them, the third surrendering.
