OHAKUNE AMATEUR CYCLING CLUB On Sunday the Ohakune Amateur Cycling Club held a 15-mile (five laps) race for the Walmsborough Cup, this being the third race of the season. The weather was fine and the roads in perfect condition. Starters were:— Blinkhorne (6min.), Graham <6min. 50sec.), P. Rush (7min. 25sec.), J. Rush (Bmin.), M. Pearson <Bmin. 15sec.), O’ Connell (Bmin. 25sec.). After the first lap J. Rush had moved from third place to take the lead. With four laps to go J. Rush still held !>.s' own with the backmarkers gaining ground. When the third lap was reached J. Rush had increased his lead by 300yds„ and P. Rush had moved into second place, the scratch man had nto at this stage gained on the leaders. With two to go J. Rush still held command from P. Rush. O'Connell and Graham, with the scratch man had not at this stage up very fast. At the final lap Graham had taken the lead from J. Rush, P. Rush, O'Connell and Blinkhorne right in behind. A hundred yards off the winning post Graham, 'P. Rush, J. Rush and O'Connell were in line and in a thrilling finish J. Rush won from P. Rush with Graham third, O'Connell fourth and Blinkhorne fifth. The winner. J. Rush, rode a veryfine race. Taking the lead from the start, he was only headed by Graham in the fourth lap, but came again at the finish with a great burst of speed. The second and third men also rode good races. O’Connell, a new senior rider, has ridden well in his last two starts and with a little more luck his turn is due very shortly. The scratch man rode a fine race indeed, but owing to the fast pace set by the frontmarkers could not gain a place. However, he was successful in gaining fastest time. In the junior rare Menzies (55sec.) was first, .Sheerin (95sec.) second, and Ray Rose (80sec.) third. Also started' W. Rush (scr.), Leckie (15sec.), Roy Rose (55sec.>, Slimo (60sec). Fastest time was gained by Leckie.
