MAJESTIC THEATRE
“THE AWFUL TRUTH" Irene Dunne, having forsaken her former stalely roles, has apparently entered into the spirit of comedy, and in ‘‘The Awful Truth,” which is continuing its successful season at the Majestic Theatre, she easily surpasses her performance in the delightful ‘Theodora Goes Wild.” Mis§ Dunne is teamed with Cary Grant, and this union produces a comedy which will not easily be forgotten. The fun really starts when the couple, after a troubled married life, apply for a divorce, and the only point which holds up quick settlement is the custody of the pet dog, “Mr. Smith." The Judge eventually decides that Miss Dunne shall have the dog, but Grant is permitted to visit it twice a week. Many of the best scenes in the film lake place \Mien these visits occur (usually when the young lady is entertaining a suitor) and the comedy is really exhilarating. Mr. Grant announces his engagement to a pretty and wealthy young lady in a good social position. His cx-wife, however, still as much in love with him as he is with her. decides to win him back, and, posing as his sister, attends his engagement party. She has little trouble in having them both practically thrown out by her wild actions, and the film moves towards a satisfying climax. The supporting players are splendid, and “Mr. Smith,” the dog,* must be classed as a star. The supporting films are entertaining. “Broadway Melody of 1938” The latest of a long and remarkable series of annual musical films, “Broadway Melody of 1938,” is 1o commence on Friday at the Majestic Theatre. Through it are cleverly woven song sequences recalling other bright shows, memories of the golden days of Broadway, and dances which bring back memories of other film successes.
