PATEA
j MAGISTRATE’S COl RT In the Patea Magistrate’s Court J oefore Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., Johni 1 Bourke, licencee of the Kakaramea 11 Hotel, was lined £5 and costs 10s for J supplying liquor after hours, and on a second charge was fined £5 and costs ‘ for supplying liquor to Richard Katene, who was under the age of 21 years. Constable Kelly said that, on Sun-1 day, March 6, two men and a youth wont to the Kakaramea Hotel and entered by the back door. They went ( into the bar and defendant supplied them with three drinks and they pur- A chased a bottle of whisky and three bottles of stout, which they took ■ away. They returned to Batea, consumed the liquor and the youth became drunk and was arrested for be- j ing drunk and disorderly. Defendant, hart been quite candid and admitted : the offence. The youth was 19 years of age and looked younger. Defend- ; ant had previously been convicted on March 12, 1936, and in July, 1931. Mr. F. W. Hamel, who appeared for defendant, pleaded guilty and stated j that prior to defendant’s occupation nine years ago the hotel had had a notorious reputation, but since then it had been well conducted and well kept. Defendant usually treated Sunday as a holiday and wont away but this day there was sickness in the house and the doctor was present at the time. Defendant was worried and rather than have an argument gave the liquor to the men and got rid of them. Defendant never seriously considered that the youth was under age. In imposing the fine, the magistrate said he would take into consideration that it was some time since the last conviction, but he took a serious view of defendant supplying liquor to the youth.
