OPENING SESSIONS

LEAGUE COUNCIL THE ABYSSINIAN QUESTION PRESENTATION GF CASE FOR SELASSIE [By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright] Received May 10, 5.5 p.m. GENEVA, May 9. The opening private session of the League Counc adjourned after a brief meeting for the purpose of arranging the agenda. The Abyssinian delegates, Taszaz and Medhen, occupied seats as observers and did not participate. At a subsequent secret meeting Haile Selassie was not present due to ill-health. The secret session discussed a compromise formula with the object of admitting the Abyssinians, and eventually a formula was found, though the efforts of the British delegate, Lord Halifax, whereby Haile Selassie’s representatives will be allowed to participate in discussion when the Abyssinian case is taken up. Mr. W. J. Jordan (New Zealand) supported M. Litvinoff (Soviet Russia) in defending the Abyssinians’ right to be present, and this led to discussion in which the Latvian and Polish delegates countered M. Litvinoff’s arguments.
