RLGBY AFFAIRS The Management Committee of the Taihape Rugby Union met on Monday evening, when there were present Messrs H. D. Bond, C. H. Transom, L. A. Hebberd, J. C. Whibley, W. Pine, A. H. Smith, S. G. Walker, R. C. Schofield, and the secretary (Mr C. L. Mullany). The Taihape Rugby Referees' Association wrote advising that Messrs F. Ward and J. C. Downey had been appointed to act in conjunction with the union's nominee on the Appointment Board. Mr W. Pine was appointed to represent the union on the board. It was decided to grant £5 to the Referees’ Association as soon as finances permit. The usual privileges are also to be made available. It was decided to ask the Borough Council to mark out the grounds as suggested by the Referees’ Association. Mr Whibley’s application for the use of the grounds in June for a school seven-a-side tourney was granted. Insurance money collected from players last Saturday is to be handed to the Hautapu Club. Fixtures for Saturday Fixtures for Saturday, May 7, were announced as follow: — Seniors Taihape Town v. Bulls, on the Tai- ' hape Domain, at 2.45 p.m. (Mr D. Graham). Taihape Country v. Hunterville, at Hunterville. J uniors Hautapu v. Utiku, on No. 1 ground, at 1.30 p.m. (Mr W. Healey). Pirates v. Huia, on No. 2 ground, at 1.30 p.m. (Mr F. Thomas). Messrs Mullany and Hebberd will be in charge of the Taihape senior country team to visit Hunterville. The bus leaves at 12.30 p.m. SHOOTING. ANNUAL MATCH. i WON BY WEST COAST COMPANY. The first annual shooting match between teams representing the R.S.A., Legion of Frontiersmen, Manawatu Mounted Rifles and Wellington West Coast Company was fired over the week-end, and the latter by establishing a good lead on the first practice, are the first holders of the trophy donated by the four teams. The mater consisted of two application practices ol > 10 rounds each, the first being fired or I N.Z. No. 2 target and the second or , the Bisley target reduced for the > 25yds. range. The R.S.A. and Legion of Frontiersmen are to be congratui Lated on their effort, when it is conj.sidered that many of them have not fired a service rifle for 20 years and that the rifles they used were strange Ito them. The annual dinner of South African War Veterans from Rangitikei and adjacent counties was held at the Gretna Hotel on Saturday evening when olci comrades reviewed friendships formed during the Eoer War and recalled the stirring days of that memorable con- | flicl. Mr. C. E. Scott occupied the chair and amongst the veterans present were Messrs. W. J. Beckett, C. Stent, J. Whittle, J. Miller, W. Brewer, T. Wells, E. W. Mercer, F. Garmonsway, C. O’Brien and A. F. McKenzie. Also in attendance were the Mayor (Mr. L. B. H. de Lautour), Messrs. J. Bosomworth and C. L. Mullany (vice-presi-dents of the Taihape R.S.A., B. Barnett, A. Whisker, C. Carrington, G. A. Sherson, H. A. Munn (Whangare!?. The chairman extended a warm welcome to the Mayor and R.S.A. representatives, Messrs. Bosomworth and Mullany, and other guests and explained that the South African Veterans wished the gathering to be as informal as possible. Messages of goodwill were received from the Dominion secretary of the South African Veterans’ Association, the Dunedin and Timaru branches, and Messrs. T. McWhirter, J. J. Ryan, J. Gresson. J. 11. Gilchrist. The toast of “The South African Veterans Association,’’ was proposed

by Mr. de Lautour. Mr. C. E. Scott responded. “The Army, Navy and Air Force” was proposed by Mr. A. F. McKenzie and responded to by Mr. G. A. Sherson. The toast of “The Nurses” was entrusted to Mr. F. Garmonsway. The toast of the “Returned Soldiers’ Association” was proposed by Mr. E. W. Mercer and replied to by Mr. J. Bosomworl h. The gathering stood in silence as a mark of respect to “Fallen Comrades.” During the evening, items were contributed by Messrs. A. Whisker, G. A. Sherson. B. Barnett. W. J. Beckett, C. Carrington. Mr. Carrington played the musical accompaniments. The chairman thanked those who had rendered social items and also expressed thanks to Mr. Quirk and his staff. GOLF. TAIHAPE LADIES’ CLUB. The draw for the May medal round to be played in conjunction with the L.G.U. Coronation Medal and Aotearoa Cup competition on Thursday, May 5, is as follow: A Grade. —Mrs. Hosking and Mrs. Boles: Miss Bowler and Miss N. Mrs. Nelson was the winner of the bogey round held on April 21, with a card of 6 down. The winner of last week's flag match was Miss Fookes, who placed the flag through the 17th. green.

SCHOOL BALL Spectacular and colourful foU dances and marches will be presented at the Taihape School ball to be held in the Town Hall to-morrow evening (Thursday). This popular annual event invariably attracts a big crowd and is always awaited with pleasurable anticipation. It is regarded as the “night of nights” by the children. All school children are invited to the ball regardless of what school they attend. CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW The annual chrysanthemum show in connection with St. David’s Presbyterian Church will take place in Lie church hall this afternoon (Wednesday). Various stalls will be conducted in conjunction with the show, and indications point to a successful fixture.
