PLAZA THEATRE
“THE RETURN OF THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL” I All the glamour and adventure of Baroness Orczy’s great romantic creation is seen again on the screen in “The Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel,” now showing at the Plaza Theatre. In the course of a picture made doubly vivid by narrow escapes and convincing acting, the audience is presented with a vivid picture of life in the troublous times following the first outburst of the French Revolution. The crowd scenes in a Paris in the grip of the Red Terror are most convincing. One is shown of the guillotine surrounded by its hungry mob of sightseers watching the noted “aristos” go to their doom. The fabled line of old women, who occupied the front seats at the executions and knitted a row for every aristocrat who fell, lives again in a scene almost too close to the audience for comfort. In the title role, Barry K. Barnes is somehow more of a flesh-and-blood figure than was Leslie Howard. As Lady Blakeney, Sophie Stewart acts with conviction, and Francis Lister makes a villainous Chauvelin. The real villain of the piece is shown as Robespierre, played by Henry Oscar.
