MAJESTIC THEATRE
“MAD ABOUT MUSIC’’ The new Deanna Durbin film, “Mad About Music,” now at the Majestic Theatre, is probably the most charming of the child star's series. Not only does it possess situations in which it is possible for the young singer to display her amazing mastery of vocal music, but it has also the virtue of an original and amusing comedy story, in which tense and hilarious situations follow in rapid sequence. Set against the picturesque background of Switzerland, “Mad About Music” deals with the fortunes of a schoolgirl exiled from her home because her film star mother dare not admit that she is old enough to have a daughtci aged 14 years. Realising that she may not acknowledge her mother, the gill invents for herself a heroic falner who, in her imagination at least, performs heroic deeds as an explorer in unlikely corners of the world. But in the end her elaborate tissue of lies threatens to disgrace her in the eyes of her school-mates. She must find a father in a hurry or be exposed. Herbert Marshall reluctantly obliges, and creates a hilarious situation from which he escapes with a charming and famous wife. The songs are delightful, and the performance of the players as diverting as any that have been given in a film comedy this year. An especially fine series of shorts makes the programme outstanding, and not the least interesting is the film devoted to the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase.
