WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
r jIETING AT WESTMERE
The monthly meeting of the Westmere Women’s Institute was held in the hall on April 12. Mrs Brownlie presided over a fair attendance. A vote of sympathy was passed for the bereaved and the suffering in the recent train disaster at Ratana. Two new members were welcomed, while a special welcome was extended to all grandmothers present for whom the afternoon's programme was arranged. The first of the new golden thread series, "The beautiful things of life," was a talk on "Courage,” given by Mrs Brownlie.
After the usual business was dealt with, Mrs Parkes gave an interesting demonstration with her spinning wheel.
The little Misses Macieay and Hood, dressed in lovely old-time costumes, entertained with a delightful minuet, preceded with the singing of "To a Miniature,” by Mrs Corliss.
Each grandmother was presented with a gay bunch of flowers, while Miss Macieay presented the oldest—a great grandmother, with a small gift. A splendid display of work, done 50 years ago or more, attracted much interest.
The points competition for the afternoon was for tomato sauce ana was won by Miss Dawes, while the best flower'entry resulted: Mrs C. Dawes 1, Mrs Grogan 2, Mrs Dickensen 3.
Hostesses for the afternoon were: Mesdames Bassett, Corrigan, H. Jones, Tank and Misses J. and b. Smith.
After passing a vote of thanks to Miss Laird f»r judging, and to all who helped towards the afternoon's success, community singing was enjoyed by all, and the singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
