TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD
ANNUAL MEETING HELD
The annual meeting of the Wanganui Townswomen’s Guild was held yesterday afternoon . in the Savage Club Hall. Owing to the very inclement weather the attendance was not as large as’ expected.
The small tables with their gold cloths were each centred with a vase of bright coloured flowers, miniature zinnias, marigolds, and dahlias predominating. Mrs. W. J. Rogers (president) presided and in a brief address said that three years ago the Townswomen’s Guild in Wanganui started with 50 members and the membership to-day was 206, a fact of which they were proud. A motion of sympathy was passed to those who had suffered in the recent train wreck, all standing for a moment as a mark of respect. Several apologies were received. Mrs. Wagstaff read the annual report, which showed that t*he attendances had been well maintained throughout the year. Thanks were conveyed to all who had helped, to the conveners of the various groups and the social committee, the pianist, secretary and treasurer and auditor, Mr. D. Robbins. Mention was made of the loss sustained by the guild in the passing of two members, Mrs. Wotton and Mrs. Brider, who will long be remembered. The report stated that eight groups have functioned during the year. The members of the guild have shown themselves willing to render assistance to other organisations requiring assistance with street collections, etc. Assistance was given to the R.S.A. on Anzac Day, a stall taken at the Toe H garden party and a stall at the exhibition of work done by disabled soldiers in England and held at the Victoria Hall in July last.
Mrs. A. H. Cole (treasurer) read the financial report which was adopted. Mrs. J. C. Wickham moved a hearty vote of thanks to the secretary and treasurer for the very efficient eports presented. Three new members were enrolled. Two items were contributed by the Orpheus Choir.
The election of officers for the ensu ing year resulted as follows:—Chair man, Mrs. J. G. Denniston; vice
chairman, Mrs. Wagstaff; secretary, Mrs. Amies; treasurer, Miss A. H. Ccle; committee, Mesdames Cotterill, Wickham, Evans, Mayo, Bullcck, Butcher, Batt, and Miss O’Malley. A vote of thanks was accorded the scrutineers, Mesdames C. R. White, E. Wat kin, Misses M. Wallace, L. Rockel and Laird. Brief reports were presented by the conveners of the various groups, as follow:--Mrs. Rice « Social Committee), Mrs. A. D. .Jenkins (Poetry Group), Mrs. Archibald (Peace and International Relations Group), Mrs. Evans (Mutual Assistance Group), Mrs. Bogle and later Mrs. Beaumont Bales (Civic Group), Mrs. I*’. Wagstaff (Garden Group), Mrs. T. L. Sperring (Drama Group), Mrs. E. M. Buller (Choir), Mrs. Bertha Bales (Arts and Crafts), i The question of the appointment of ■ guild representative on the Children’s Garden Circle was deferred until next meeting. Arrangements were made for contributions for the afternoon tea for the Returned SoMiers on Anzac Day,
Mrs. Denniston, who was re-elected unopposed, was received with prolonged applause. She returned thanks to the members and thanked all the officers of the guild, especially Mrs. Wagstaff, who had taken over the duties of Mrs. Archibald when the latter could not continue the position of secretary. Afternoon tea was enjoyed.
