POSSIBILITY OF RIFT CO-OPERATION ESSENTIAL WARNING TO EMPLOYERS “I am not proposing to do any pro* phesying as to what it may be necessary to record if I have the pleasure of meeting you again in 12 months time. I think, however, I should say that in my opinion one of the greatest dangers this country has to face is the possible rift between the primary producers and the city employer,” said Mr. T. Bishop, secretary of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, when addressing members of the Wanganui Association on Tuesday night. “Their interests are so interdependent that they can only be fully developed by the closest possible mutual understanding and co-operation and yet there are men in public life at present who, whether from ignorance or from design consistently give utterance to statements which foster a spirit of antagonism and hostility. These should be regarded as the archcriminals. “We have a country which, by hard work and the application of both capital and labour, has been brought to a state of wonderful productivity from the land. We have also abundant resources upon which to draw for the development of other productive industries. So far the development of production from the land has progressed further than has the development of other industries, but other industries are also firmly established and are expanding from year to year. They must continue to expand as our population increases even normally, and if anv expansion of population is to come from immigration It appears much more likely that the increase will be absorbed In other industries than in further production land. But this development of / dustries must be on economic lines if it is to be sound and lasting—it must not be unduly forced—and above all the thing „ that essentially must be avoided is ton great a disparity between the prices we can get for our exports in the world's markets and the prices at which we can sell our goods 10* into’’” consumption.
