BIG INTER-CLUB TOURNEY
THREE STRONG VISITING TEAMS COOK’S GARDENS EASIER ATTRACTION (By “Cross-bar.”) Wanganui will be well catered lor in the way of Rugby at Easter, the major attraction being the inter-cluo tournament for the Cook Shield between Wellington, Hawke’s Bay and Wanganui Pirates, Kia Toa, Palmerston North. Three strong visiting teams are being sent to Wanganui for this annual event, which is to be played on Cook’s Gardens on Eastei Saturday and Easter Monday, the timetable each day being arranged so as not to clash with the New Zealand rowing events in the river.
A glance at the personnel of the visiting teams discloses first of all that Kia Toa, holders of the shield, are taking no chances. Their team contains one All Black and six others who were Manawatu representatives last year. R. McKenzie, the captain of the team, needs no introduction to the Wanganui public. Apart from his play for the Manawatu pack he has given good service as an All Black. He will be supported by G. Walsley, who represented Manawatu nine times last year, four as wing three-quarter and five at centre; by R. Thomas, who played five-eighths seven times for Manawatu last year, and by L. Horne, L. Beard, A. Williams, and A. Whyte, all of whom were members of Manawatu’s rathei formidable pack of last year. Looking at the teams on paper one is tempted to regard the shield already in Kia Toa’s safe keeping. Wellington Pirates, a comparatively new combination, will star H. Love, the five-eighth who played so effectively in last year’s All Black trials. Of him could be said that he ranked next to C. A Crossman in the promise he revealed. Napier Pirates, which are under the presidency of Norman McKenzie, will be sending three Hawke’s Bay representatives in their team, all of them forwards —P. N. McKenzie, H. F. Fraser and R. Keeble.
Wanganui will field a team which has been practising solidly. It will include Berryman, the Wanganui winger, and W. Stewart, one of Wanganui’s best forwards. C. Vernon, the player who performed well for Marist last year, will play full-back. Kench, Deerness and Pedley will form the backbone of a good pack. On paper the teams sort themselves. out this:—Kia Toa 1, Napier Pirates 2, Wellington and Wanganui 3. What actual play will reveal remains to be seen.
