"STOCK EMBARGO”

Sir, —1 am enclosing a clipping Australasian, page 32, February 19, 1938, showing that in Australia, where there is no embargo, pastoralists go to America for modern beef and bulls, but even in that country English cattle ambassadors are causing venom to be filtered through the press for the sake of the almighty dollar. I am in a position to prove that the fertility of New Zealand can produce a class of cattle that no country on earth can produce and to that end it is imperative that a special stud book should be established and no entry accepted that is not up to standard. Up to time of writing I have seen no notice of “Aphtae epizootical” having made its appearance in Jersey Island, but several weeks ago I received a copy of a letter written there, stating that it had already broken out and all cattle were in quarantine, also dogs. Have we no stock inspectors?— I am, etc., JOSEPH CARWARDINE, Registered V.S. Westmen April 4, 1938. The extract from the Australasian is as follows:

Mr. James Sparkes, of Lvndley, near Dalby (Q.), recently purenased from Mr. G. F. Moore, of Bushy Park (N.Z.), the Polled Hereford bull Park Prime Anxiety 4th., which is considered by good judges to be the most promising young sire of the breed that has yet been exported from the Dominion. Sired by Prime Anxiety (imp.), one of the four double standard Polled Hereford bulls imported from the United States by Mr. Moore, he comes from the Amethyst family founded by the noted imported cow of that name, whose progeny have comprised the majority of the most notable prize winners bred in the Bushy Park stud. He is well marked and richly coloured, with a striking conformation set off by a sire’s head with pigmented eyes.

Mr. Sparkes has also recently acquired in the United States another young double standard bull at a high figure at auction, which is now on his way to Australia. The herd at Lyndley is one of the largest pedigreed Hereford herds in Australia, and is descended from some of the most noted horned sires of Tocal and imported English blood. Mr. Sparkes intends dehorning the entire herd by th* use of polled stud bulls, and for thi« purpose has acquired the sires mentioned to supplement the stud of about six stock bulls previously imported from the United States and New Zealand.
