NEW CONDUCTOR’S DtATH

CAPTAIN F. AVERY DEAD

Telegraphic advice of the death ot Captain F. Avery, D.C.M., at Auckland, was received yesterday by Mr W. F. Nicholls, secretary to the Queen Alexandra’s Second Mounted Rifles Band. Captain Avery was appointed conductor of the band recently and was to arrive in the city on April 29 to take up his duties on May 1.

The late Captain Avery had a wide and varied experience in band training and was a euphonium player of note, having played solo euphonium in the Royal Artillery Band in England for many years. He passed through Knellcr Hall as bandmaster and conductor. He served in the South African War and on the NorthWest Frontier, Mediterranean and the Great War, and wore nine decorations, including the D.C.M. and the Croix de Guerre. Altogether he had 20 years’ service.

The death of Captain Avery will be a serious loss for the Queen Alexandra’s Second Mounted Rifles Band.
