TARIFF ON GLOVES

; MR N ASH’S STATEMENT I [ Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, April li An Order-in-Council gazetted notifies that on and after April 3 the New Zealand-Belgium trade arrangement will be modified by increasing the duty on gloves composed wholly or principally of leather from 40 to 60 per cent, ad valorem. The Hon W. Nash states that the reduction in duty made on September 1, 1936, had seriously affected the New Zealand glove manufacturing industry, and considerable unemployment had resulted. Competition came chiefly from Continental countries, other than Belgium, enjoying most favoured national treatment. The alteration in the tariff should considerably assist the New Zealand industry. The margin of preference enjoyed by Australia and Canada will be maintained.
